In his training, Dr. Zelken studied the classical angles, proportions, and shapes said to define the "ideal" nose. He considers those parameters somewhat dated — a general guideline at best — and evaluates every nose on an individual basis rather than against a formula.

What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, often called a nose job, is a way of improving appearance by reshaping, enlarging, or reducing the nose. It can also repair structural problems that affect breathing, such as a deviated septum.
Although rhinoplasty is one of the most widely performed plastic surgeries in the United States, it is also one of the most difficult to perform — requiring both surgical skill and an artful hand.

Are You a Good Rhinoplasty Candidate?
The best candidates are healthy men and women who are unhappy with the shape, size, or balance of their nose and want a natural improvement. Ideal patients have completed facial growth, don't smoke (or are willing to quit before surgery), and have realistic expectations about what rhinoplasty can achieve.
Facial growth typically finishes sometime between ages 13 and 25, depending on the individual. The first step is a consultation, where you can explain what you'd like to change and Dr. Zelken will give you a candid, individualized assessment of your options.
What to Expect
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Depending on the changes planned, Dr. Zelken makes the incisions inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty) or across the narrow strip of skin between the nostrils (open rhinoplasty), where any scar heals hidden and barely visible. He then reshapes the nose by sculpting bone and cartilage, sometimes removing cartilage or grafting it from your nose, ear, or rib to build lasting support and refined shape.

First Week
- A small splint or cast protects the nose for about a week.
- Swelling and bruising around the eyes peak on days 2–3.
- Rest with your head elevated to ease swelling.
Two Weeks
- The splint is typically removed around day 7.
- Most visible bruising has resolved.
- Many patients return to work and light social activity.
Four to Six Weeks
- Swelling continues to subside week by week.
- Exercise resumes gradually, per Dr. Zelken's guidance.
- The refined shape of the nose becomes clearer.
Long-Term
- Subtle swelling in the tip settles over several months.
- Final, natural results emerge over the course of a year.
