Approach

Dr. Zelken's Philosophy

The plastic surgery field has grown rapidly, which means your choices in surgeons have grown too. Before any procedure, do your homework on both the operation and the doctor. Dr. Jonathan Zelken trained in general and plastic surgery at Johns Hopkins, followed by a highly competitive microsurgery fellowship. Licensed in California and New York, he is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Beyond credentials, the Zelken Institute for Aesthetic Medicine in Newport Beach offers personalized care built around your lifestyle and goals. Whether you're seeking enhanced toning, scar reduction, fat removal, or treatment for skin concerns, you've come to the right place.

Because important blood vessels and nerves run through the upper arm, choosing a board-certified specialist matters more here than almost anywhere else on the body.

The Procedure

What Are Arm Procedures?

Arm procedures reduce fat in stubborn areas while tightening loose skin, helping your arms look and feel their best. Fluctuations in weight, aging, and genetics can all cause the skin of the upper arm to droop — and when that happens, exercise and weight training often can't fully correct it.

Surgical and energy-based options directly address both the excess skin and the underlying tissue that diet and the gym leave behind.

Rather than focusing on a single trademarked name, Dr. Zelken tailors the approach to your anatomy and goals, whether that means an arm lift, BodyTite, liposuction, or a combination. During your consultation he'll explain which techniques best fit your arms and what results you can realistically expect.

Tailored to You

Arm Procedures We Offer

Several ways to refine and tighten your arms.

  • Arm Lift (Brachioplasty) Tightens and smooths supportive tissue to reduce sagging skin and redefine the upper arm.
  • BodyTite Radiofrequency energy heats deep tissue to tighten from within, often paired with liposuction for tone.
  • Liposuction Removes stubborn fat deposits to slim the arm, frequently combined with skin-tightening techniques.
  • Combination Approach Blends surgical and energy-based methods for the smoothest, most balanced result for your anatomy.

Is It Right For You

Who Is a Good Candidate?

The best candidates are healthy men and women bothered by loose skin or stubborn fullness on the upper arms — often after weight loss, with age, or simply from genetics. If exercise and weight training haven't given you the tone you want, surgery may be the answer. Ideal patients are non-smokers with realistic expectations who are ready for a lasting improvement.

Some patients are better suited to an arm lift, which addresses significant skin laxity, while others with good skin quality and more modest fullness may be candidates for BodyTite with liposuction. The right approach depends on how much loose skin and fat you have, and on your skin's elasticity. Dr. Zelken will assess your arms during a consultation and recommend the option that best fits your body and your goals.

What to Expect

The Arm Procedure

Every arm procedure begins with a consultation — in person or virtually for out-of-town patients — where Dr. Zelken evaluates your skin, tissue, and goals to recommend the right technique. A preoperative visit follows to review bloodwork, photographs, and recovery guidelines. Surgery is performed in a fully accredited facility with board-certified anesthesiologists, so your safety and comfort are protected at every step.

Healing Timeline

Recovery

First Week

  • Some swelling and bruising are normal, and discomfort is usually mild and well-controlled. Many patients see an immediate change in contour.

Two to Three Weeks

  • Swelling continues to settle and many patients return to desk work and light activity. Follow Dr. Zelken's guidance on incision care.

Four to Six Weeks

  • Most restrictions lift and you can gradually resume full exercise, including upper-body training, as cleared by Dr. Zelken.

Long-Term

  • Most improvements are permanent. Keeping a stable weight and staying active help preserve your smoother, more sculpted arm contour.

The Outcome

Results & Longevity

Arm procedures deliver lasting rejuvenation you can see and feel. Once swelling resolves, the upper arm looks slimmer, firmer, and more defined, with a smoother transition from shoulder to elbow. While the natural aging process continues and skin elasticity gradually declines over time, the majority of your improvement is permanent.

Maintaining a stable weight, staying active, and caring for your skin all help protect your result for years to come. Where an incision is used, Dr. Zelken employs meticulous, well-planned closure and a range of scar-management strategies so that any scar fades and stays as inconspicuous as possible.

Risks & Considerations

As with any surgery, arm procedures carry some risk — swelling, bruising, numbness, changes in sensation, and scarring. Arm lift surgery in particular creates a scar; while Dr. Zelken uses careful techniques to minimize and refine it, a scar will remain. Because important blood vessels and nerves run through the upper arm, this is a procedure best entrusted to a board-certified plastic surgeon. Every consideration is reviewed openly during your consultation.

Common Questions

Arm Procedure FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most about arm procedures.

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, removes excess skin and tightens the underlying tissue to reduce sagging and redefine the shape of the upper arm.

An arm lift does create a scar. Dr. Zelken uses careful placement and scar-management strategies to minimize it, but a scar will remain.

BodyTite uses radiofrequency energy to heat and tighten deep tissue. Combined with liposuction, it can improve both the bulk and tone of the arms.

Some patients with good skin quality and modest fullness are candidates. It isn't right for everyone, so ask Dr. Zelken during your consultation.

Often not. When loose skin is the problem, exercise and weight training can't tighten it — surgery or energy-based tightening is usually required.

Most patients return to desk work within two to three weeks and resume full exercise around four to six weeks, per Dr. Zelken's guidance.

Most improvements are lasting. Some elasticity naturally declines with age, but keeping a stable weight and staying active help preserve your result.

Yes. BodyTite is often paired with liposuction, and arm work can be coordinated with other body procedures — discussed during your consultation.
