Approach

Dr. Zelken's Philosophy

At the Zelken Institute for Aesthetic Medicine in Newport Beach, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Zelken approaches liposuction as sculpture, not subtraction. The goal is never simply to remove fat, but to reveal the natural lines and proportions that stubborn deposits have been hiding.

As both an artist and a scientist, Dr. Zelken studies how light, shadow, and movement define a silhouette, then plans each contour accordingly. Liposuction, done well, should look effortless — a body that appears fit and balanced, never over-treated or uneven.

He favors refined, tissue-preserving techniques such as power-assisted liposuction, working in smooth, controlled passes to protect the skin and surrounding structures. The result is a more sculpted version of you, not a different you — the reason patients travel from across Orange County and beyond to place their trust in his hands.

The Procedure

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction, or suction lipectomy, removes localized fat from the body through a closed suction system. A thin tube called a cannula is guided through tiny, inconspicuous incisions to loosen and remove fat, refining the contours beneath. Modern advances — including power-assisted, ultrasound-assisted, and laser-assisted techniques, as well as BodyTite radiofrequency — help dissolve or emulsify fat for smoother, more controlled results.

One common misconception is that liposuction is a weight-loss procedure. Although a meaningful volume of fat can be removed in a single outpatient session, liposuction is a sculpting procedure — not a substitute for diet and exercise — and it does not tighten loose or inelastic skin on its own. Where it excels is in treating stubborn, diet-resistant fat deposits.

Dr. Zelken uses liposuction to improve contours and proportions in both men and women, targeting areas such as the abdomen and waist, hips, thighs and buttocks, upper arms, back, chin, neck, and ankles. It can be performed on its own or alongside other procedures, offering more consistent, predictable results than noninvasive alternatives.

Tailored to You

Liposuction Techniques

Matched to your body and goals.

  • Power-Assisted (PAL) A vibrating cannula tip loosens fat for smoother, more controlled passes — Dr. Zelken's preferred technique for a refined, even result.
  • BodyTite Radiofrequency energy melts fat while tightening skin from within, adding contraction where soft-tissue laxity is a concern.
  • Ultrasound-Assisted Ultrasonic energy liquefies denser or fibrous fat before removal, easing treatment of areas like the back and male chest.
  • Laser-Assisted Laser energy helps dissolve fat cells prior to suction and may encourage mild skin tightening in select areas.

Is It Right For You

Are You a Good Candidate?

The best candidates for liposuction are adults within roughly thirty percent of their ideal weight who have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone. It works best on isolated pockets of fat that persist despite a healthy diet and regular exercise. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity, a substitute for weight loss, or a fix for cellulite or significantly loose, sagging skin.

Ideal patients are in good general health, without conditions that impair healing, and — because smoking interferes with recovery — Dr. Zelken asks patients to stop smoking well before surgery. Just as important is mindset: the best outcomes come from patients with realistic expectations who understand that liposuction refines shape rather than lowering the number on the scale.

If you are bothered by diet-resistant fat and are close to your goal weight, you may be an excellent candidate. Where skin laxity is a concern, Dr. Zelken may recommend pairing liposuction with a skin-tightening option such as BodyTite. Your candidacy is confirmed during a personal consultation.

What to Expect

The Liposuction Procedure

Every liposuction journey begins with a consultation, where Dr. Zelken reviews your goals, health history, and the areas that concern you, then recommends a tailored plan. Depending on the extent of treatment, surgery is performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia in a fully accredited facility. Through small, hidden incisions, fat is gently loosened and suctioned in smooth, controlled passes for a refined, even contour.

Healing Timeline

Recovery

First Days

  • A compression garment is worn to control swelling and support your new contour. Discomfort is usually mild and well-managed; any small drains, if used, are typically removed early.

First Weeks

  • Swelling and bruising steadily improve, and many patients return to desk work within a week or two. Light activity resumes early, with strenuous exercise reintroduced on Dr. Zelken's schedule.

One to Three Months

  • As residual swelling resolves, your refined contours emerge. Skin continues to retract over the treated areas, improving how you look both in and out of clothing.

Long-Term

  • Results are long-lasting when you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. Some natural softening occurs with age, and occasionally a minor touch-up refines the final result.

The Outcome

Results & Longevity

Because liposuction physically removes fat cells from the treated areas, its results are enduring. Once the swelling fully settles — often over one to three months — you're left with a slimmer, more sculpted silhouette that holds as long as your weight stays stable. The improvement goes beyond a single measurement: clothing fits better, proportions look more balanced, and many patients feel a renewed sense of confidence in their shape.

The fat cells removed during surgery do not return, though the remaining cells can still enlarge with significant weight gain, so a steady weight and active lifestyle are the best way to protect your investment. As with any procedure, individual results vary, and Dr. Zelken's goal is always a natural, proportionate outcome — never an over-treated look. For patients with mild skin laxity, pairing liposuction with a tightening technique can further refine the long-term result.

Transparency

Risks & Considerations

As with any surgery, liposuction carries some risks, including swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, and, less commonly, contour irregularities. Dr. Zelken believes in complete transparency and reviews every consideration with you before proceeding. Detailed pre- and post-operative instructions — along with careful, controlled technique — help minimize these risks and support smooth healing.

Common Questions

Liposuction FAQ

Answers to the questions Dr. Zelken hears most about liposuction.

No. Liposuction is a sculpting procedure, not a weight-loss method. It removes stubborn, localized fat to refine your shape, but it isn't a substitute for diet and exercise.

On its own, no. For patients with skin laxity, Dr. Zelken may pair liposuction with BodyTite or a skin-excision procedure to improve tightening.

Much of the skin retracts over six to twelve months. Where more laxity remains, BodyTite or a procedure like a tummy tuck or arm lift can help.

Common areas include the abdomen and waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, back, chin, neck, and ankles — in both men and women.

The fat cells removed don't return. Remaining cells can still enlarge with weight gain, so a stable weight keeps your results looking their best.

Depending on the treatment, Dr. Zelken may use local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, always in a fully accredited surgical facility.

Because every treatment is individualized, pricing depends on the areas treated and technique used. You'll receive a clear quote after your consultation.
