Approach

Dr. Zelken's Philosophy

A tummy tuck should refine your silhouette without ever looking overdone. At the Zelken Institute for Aesthetic Medicine in Newport Beach, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Zelken approaches abdominal contouring as both an artist and a scientist — restoring a firm, natural midsection while respecting your individual proportions.

The goal is never simply to remove skin. It is to rebuild the underlying architecture of the abdomen — repairing separated muscles, redraping the skin, and refining the waistline — so the result looks balanced, athletic, and entirely your own.

Dr. Zelken has spent years refining every step of the abdominoplasty, from incision placement to muscle repair to scar management. Patients from across Orange County and beyond trust him for results that feel like a natural version of themselves, not a surgical one.

The Procedure

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck — the everyday term for abdominoplasty — removes excess skin and stubborn fat that resist diet and exercise, and in many cases repairs abdominal muscles that have weakened or separated. It is one of the most popular body procedures, performed both on its own and as part of a mommy makeover.

There are many flavors of the tummy tuck. They range from skin-only mini tummy tucks to traditional hip-to-hip procedures that reposition the belly button and tighten the "six-pack" muscles. In select cases, BodyTite skin tightening combined with liposuction — and sometimes a mini tummy tuck — can deliver an excellent result with relatively little downtime and small or no visible scars.

Rather than focusing on trademarked names, Dr. Zelken keeps the concept focused on the result: a flatter, firmer, more toned abdomen. How that is achieved is highly individual, so it's best to call it what it is — your tummy tuck.

Tailored to You

Types of Tummy Tucks We Offer

Tailored to your body and your goals.

  • Mini / Skin-Only Tummy Tuck A targeted lift for loose lower-abdominal skin, with a shorter incision and quicker downtime.
  • Full Abdominoplasty The traditional hip-to-hip approach — repositioning the belly button and tightening separated muscles for a complete result.
  • BodyTite + Liposuction Skin tightening with liposuction, sometimes paired with a mini tuck, for excellent contouring and minimal scarring.
  • Muscle Repair (Diastasis) Tightening the "six-pack" muscles that separate after pregnancy or weight change to rebuild core support.
  • Mommy Makeover Combination Combined with breast and body procedures to restore the figure after pregnancy in a single stage.

Is It Right For You

Who is a Good Tummy Tuck Candidate?

A tummy tuck isn't right for everyone. If you plan to lose a significant amount of weight, or you are a woman considering future pregnancies, it's usually best to postpone surgery until your body is stable — the results are longest-lasting when your weight is steady.

Beyond that, the best candidates are generally healthy, with no medical conditions that would affect healing or raise surgical risk. During your consultation, Dr. Zelken and his team will make sure your goals are realistic and that you are committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle after you recover.

If you've been frustrated by loose skin, a stubborn lower belly, or muscle separation that lingered after pregnancy, a tummy tuck may be the definitive step that diet and exercise alone can't provide.

What to Expect

The Tummy Tuck Procedure

Every tummy tuck begins with a consultation, where Dr. Zelken reviews your health, goals, and lifestyle and recommends the right approach. Being fully forthcoming about your medical history is essential, and he will ask that you stop smoking well before surgery. You'll review the risks, sign consent forms, and may be asked to complete lab work or adjust certain medications that can increase bleeding.

On the day of surgery, either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is used for your comfort. The size and placement of incisions depend on how much excess skin is removed and on Dr. Zelken's judgment. A common approach uses a low horizontal incision between the pubic hairline and the belly button, followed by tightening of the abdominal muscles; a second incision around the navel may be needed to address the upper abdomen, and any hernias found are repaired. The belly button is repositioned as needed, incisions are closed, and thin temporary drains and a compression garment help limit swelling and support the abdomen as it heals.

Healing Timeline

Recovery

The First Days

  • A long-acting nerve block means many patients wake with little pain. A compression garment and thin drains limit swelling and support healing.

First Week or Two

  • You won't stand fully upright at first, but within one to two weeks most patients are standing tall with a trimmer belly.

Follow-Up Care

  • Dr. Zelken's team guides you on incision and drain care and schedules follow-ups. Following instructions closely is essential to your result.

Long-Term Results

  • Scars sit low and fade over time. With a stable weight and healthy lifestyle, your trimmer contour is long-lasting.

The Outcome

Results & Longevity

A tummy tuck offers enduring rejuvenation of the midsection. Because swelling takes time to settle and you won't stand fully upright until internal healing is underway, the final result isn't visible right away — but within a week or two most patients are standing tall with a noticeably trimmer, flatter belly.

Some scarring will always remain, placed low so it can be concealed beneath clothing and swimwear, and it continues to fade over the months that follow. With a stable weight and a healthy, active lifestyle, the improvement to your abdominal contour is long-lasting.

As with all of Dr. Zelken's work, the aim is a result that looks natural rather than "operated on" — a firmer, more balanced silhouette that feels like the best version of you.

Transparency

Risks & Considerations

As with any surgery, a tummy tuck carries risks, including numbness or other changes in skin sensation, unfavorable scarring, fluid collection (seroma), wound-healing issues, or a small "dog-ear" at the ends of the incision. Prior abdominal surgery can also limit results. Dr. Zelken believes in complete transparency and will review every consideration with you, and his team provides detailed pre- and post-operative instructions to reduce risk and support healing.
