Approach
Our Approach to Healthy Skin
Great skincare is not about chasing trends — it's about matching the right treatment to your skin. At the Zelken Institute for Aesthetic Medicine in Newport Beach, we build every plan around your skin type, your concerns, and your goals.
Our menu spans gentle, no-downtime facials to medium-depth resurfacing peels, so we can go as light or as deep as your skin needs. Many of our treatments — including Hydrafacial, microneedling, and the RevePeel — are designed to be safe for all skin tones, including deeper and more pigmented skin that is often overlooked by traditional resurfacing.
Whether you're preventing early signs of aging or correcting years of sun damage, hyperpigmentation, or acne scarring, our team guides you to the treatment — or combination of treatments — that delivers real, lasting results. The goal is always the same: healthier, clearer, more radiant skin that still looks entirely like you.
The Basics
What Is Medical Skincare?
Medical skincare goes beyond creams and serums. These are professional-grade treatments that resurface, exfoliate, and stimulate your skin's own repair processes to correct concerns that topical products alone can't reach — fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, melasma, enlarged pores, acne, and acne scarring.
Some treatments work at the surface for an instant, no-downtime glow. Others reach the deeper layers to trigger new collagen and lasting renewal. Because every skin type and concern is different, care is customized: we assess your skin, review your history and goals, and recommend the treatment — or series of treatments — most likely to get you there.
Many options are safe for all skin tones, including deeper and more pigmented skin. During your visit, your provider will explain what each treatment does, what to expect, and how to protect your results afterward.
Tailored to You
Skincare Treatments We Offer
Matched to your skin type and goals.
- RevePeel Our medium-depth resurfacing peel. A Croton-oil delivery system spreads TCA, salicylic, lactic, and phenol evenly to reach deeper pigment and damage — effective on melasma, acne, and fine lines with minimal downtime.
- Hydrafacial A gentle, no-downtime hydradermabrasion that cleanses, exfoliates, and infuses hydrating serums using vortex suction. Safe for all skin tones, with add-on boosters to brighten, plump, and refine tone in one session.
- Chemical Peel Applied solutions remove damaged outer layers to reveal smoother, clearer skin. Available in light, medium, and deep depths — from a healthy glow to correcting deeper wrinkles and sun damage.
- Microdermabrasion A non-invasive treatment that gently sands away the dull outer layer and stimulates collagen. Safe for all skin tones, it softens pores, age spots, fine lines, and acne scars, and primes skin for serums.
- Microneedling An automated pen creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger your body's own collagen response — firming skin and softening scars, fine lines, and pigment. Minimally invasive and suitable for most skin types.

Is It Right For You
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Most healthy adults who want to improve the look and feel of their skin are candidates for one or more of our treatments — and because the menu ranges from gentle facials to deeper peels, there is usually a good fit for every skin type and tone. Ideal candidates have realistic expectations and are bothered by concerns like dullness, uneven tone, fine lines, enlarged pores, sun damage, or acne scarring.
Some treatments call for extra caution. If you are prone to abnormal scarring, have very sensitive or reactive skin, or a history of cold sores, let your provider know — a flare can often be prevented with medication. Deeper resurfacing may not be recommended if you've taken isotretinoin (Accutane) within the past six months, or in some cases for very deeply pigmented skin, where a gentler option is usually the safer choice.
The best way to know which treatment suits you is a consultation, where your provider reviews your skin, history, and goals before recommending a plan.
What to Expect
Your Treatment Visit
Every treatment begins with a consultation, where your provider reviews your skin, medical history, medications, and goals to recommend the right approach. On treatment day, your skin is cleansed and the treatment is performed in our comfortable, spa-like setting. Most sessions take from about thirty minutes to an hour, and your provider will send you home with clear aftercare and sun-protection guidance.
Healing Timeline
Recovery & Aftercare
After a Facial or Peel
- Light treatments like Hydrafacial have essentially no downtime. Peels bring redness, mild stinging, and flaking; medium peels shed over about a week. Moisturize often and protect skin from the sun.
After Microdermabrasion
- Redness, mild swelling, and dryness usually settle within hours to a few days. Skin is more sun-sensitive, so apply sunscreen right away and follow any recommended moisturizer.
After Microneedling
- Expect redness like a mild sunburn for a day or two. Avoid sun exposure and wear SPF 30 or higher. Tell your provider of any cold-sore history to prevent a flare.
Protecting Your Results
- Daily sunscreen, gentle skincare, and a series of sessions give the best, longest-lasting results. Many treatments pair well with retinol to accelerate cell turnover and collagen.
The Outcome
Results & Longevity
Results depend on the treatment and your skin. A single Hydrafacial delivers an immediate glow that lasts about a week, while a series builds smoother, more refined skin over time. Resurfacing peels and microneedling work gradually as new collagen forms — skin looks clearer, firmer, and more even over the weeks that follow, and improvements build with repeated sessions.
Deeper treatments produce the most dramatic, longest-lasting change; a deep peel's results can last for years. Because these treatments renew your own skin rather than mask it, the effect is natural — healthy, radiant skin that still looks like you. Consistent sun protection and good skincare protect and extend every result.

Risks & Considerations
As with any skin treatment, temporary redness, stinging, swelling, and flaking are common and expected. Less often, treatments can cause skin lightening (hypopigmentation) or darkening (hyperpigmentation), and, rarely, scarring or infection. A cold-sore history can trigger a flare, which medication can help prevent. Your provider will review every risk relevant to your skin and treatment during your consultation, and provide detailed pre- and post-care instructions to keep you safe.

Common Questions
Skincare FAQ
Answers to the questions we hear most about our skincare treatments.
Most healthy adults are, but caution applies if you've taken isotretinoin in the past six months, scar abnormally, or have very deeply pigmented skin. A consultation confirms the safest option.
Temporary redness, stinging, and flaking are normal. Less commonly, skin can lighten or darken, and a cold-sore history may flare — often preventable with medication. Share your full history with your provider.
That depends on your skin type, concerns, and downtime. From no-downtime Hydrafacial to deeper peels, your provider will recommend the best single treatment or combination at your consultation.
Most people tolerate it well. You may feel mild scratching or vibration. A numbing cream can be applied first, and any redness usually fades within a day or two.
Yes. Hydrafacial, microneedling, and the Croton-oil RevePeel are designed to be safe for all skin tones, with a lower risk of post-treatment pigmentation than older resurfacing methods.
It varies by treatment and goal. Many patients start with a short series, then move to maintenance sessions. Your provider will map out a schedule for your skin.
Your skin is more sun-sensitive afterward, so apply SPF 30 or higher right away and limit sun exposure. Deeper treatments require sun protection for longer.
Often, yes. Peels and microneedling pair well with retinol and good skincare to extend results. Your provider will design a safe, effective combination for your skin.
