Approach

Dr. Zelken's Philosophy

Choosing your surgeon matters more with a breast lift than with almost any other procedure. Dr. Zelken encourages you to pick a surgeon with extensive experience in breast reduction, lift, and cancer reconstruction — and, more importantly, one who voices a genuine obsession for symmetry and an artistic touch.

It is remarkably easy to create asymmetries in areolar diameter and breast shape that compromise the final result and lead to revision surgery. Dr. Zelken's philosophy is built around avoiding exactly that: meticulous planning, careful measurement, and a commitment to a result that looks and feels entirely natural.

As a board-certified plastic surgeon in Newport Beach — an artist as much as a scientist — he treats every breast lift as an individual work, never a one-size-fits-all operation.

The Procedure

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is the art of repositioning the nipple and redistributing breast tissue from the lower pole upward. There are many ways to accomplish this, and the right approach differs according to your goals, your physique, and sometimes even from one breast to the other.

The procedure has grown steadily more popular over the last decade, and it is a wonderful way to enhance your appearance using your own tissue — and nothing but your own tissue. A breast lift is designed for women who want to improve the shape of their breasts, but not necessarily the volume.

Of all the procedures Dr. Zelken performs, the breast lift is the farthest thing from one-size-fits-all: every patient is examined carefully, and every plan is tailored to her anatomy and her goals.

Tailored to You

Breast Lift Techniques

Dr. Zelken tailors the technique — and the scar pattern — to your anatomy and goals.

  • Circumareolar (Donut) A scar placed around the border of the areola. Well suited to mild ptosis, it offers the most limited lift of the three patterns.
  • Vertical (Lollipop) A scar around the areola and down to the breast fold. This vertical pattern gives more lift and reshaping than the donut, with a moderate scar.
  • Wise Pattern (Anchor) A scar around the areola, down the front, and along the fold. The longest scar, but it delivers excellent shape and the most control over width and height.
  • Dr. Zelken's Approach He has no fixed preference, but most often uses the Wise pattern for its superior shape control — always trading the right scar for the best result.

Is It Right For You

Who is a Good Candidate?

The ideal breast lift candidate is a woman who wants to improve the shape and position of her breasts rather than their volume. Ptosis — the medical term for sagging — occurs in women of all ages, driven by gravity, time, childbirth, weight loss, or simply anatomy, and there is no strict age cutoff. Dr. Zelken has performed this operation on patients as young as nineteen.

The best candidates are in good overall health, are non-smokers, and understand that a breast lift trades some scarring for meaningfully improved shape. If you are content with your size but wish your breasts sat higher and firmer, a lift may be exactly right — and if you would also like to change volume, it can often be combined with augmentation or reduction. Your candidacy is best confirmed in a one-on-one consultation.

What to Expect

The Breast Lift Procedure

Breast lift surgery is a rewarding challenge, because it demands both artistic vision and a deep understanding of breast anatomy. A nipple and areola should never simply be cut off and sewn back on if an elegant result is the goal. In rare cases a free nipple graft may be necessary, but preserving the blood and nerve supply to the nipple is always the ultimate aim of mastopexy.

To protect that blood supply, Dr. Zelken may use a tool called SPY, which lets him visualize areas of disturbed blood flow in the operating room — guiding real-time decisions that lead to the safest, most beautiful result. Surgery is performed in a fully accredited facility with board-certified anesthesia care, and every step is planned around your individual anatomy.

Healing Timeline

Recovery

First Week

  • Rest with your chest elevated. Swelling and bruising peak early; discomfort is usually mild and well controlled, and most patients wear a supportive surgical bra.

Two Weeks

  • Many patients return to desk work and light activity. Sutures are checked or removed, and everyday movement becomes far more comfortable.

Four to Six Weeks

  • Swelling continues to settle and the new breast shape takes form. Most patients gradually resume exercise once Dr. Zelken clears them.

Long-Term

  • Scars fade over many months and the lifted, more youthful contour endures. Sun protection and a stable weight help preserve your result.

The Outcome

Results & Longevity

A breast lift delivers a firmer, more youthful breast that sits higher on the chest, with the nipple and areola restored to a natural, balanced position. Because the improvement comes from reshaping your own tissue, the result looks and feels like you — only lifted.

While gravity, pregnancy, and significant weight change continue over a lifetime, a well-executed lift is long-lasting, and most patients enjoy their results for many years. Maintaining a stable weight, protecting your skin, and wearing good support all help preserve the shape Dr. Zelken creates.

Transparency

Risks & Considerations

As with any surgery, a breast lift carries risks such as swelling, bruising, changes in sensation, and scarring. Women who smoke, are diabetic, or have had prior breast surgery face a higher risk of complications including partial or total nipple loss, wound breakdown, and skin loss. Dr. Zelken believes in complete transparency and reviews every consideration — and how he minimizes it — during your consultation.

Common Questions

Breast Lift FAQ

Answers to the questions Dr. Zelken hears most often about breast lift surgery.

Yes. A lift is often part of a mommy makeover, breast reduction, weight-loss surgery, and even cancer reconstruction. Surgery time ranges from about an hour to several, depending on ptosis, asymmetry, and your goals.

A lift reshapes and raises the breast rather than changing volume. If you also want to be larger or smaller, it can be combined with an implant or a reduction.

That depends on the technique. Scars may circle the areola, run vertically to the fold, or add a line along the fold — and they fade over time.

A breast lift is long-lasting, though gravity, weight changes, and pregnancy continue over a lifetime. A stable weight and good support help preserve your result.

Many women can, because the technique preserves the nipple's blood and nerve supply, but it cannot be guaranteed. Discuss your plans with Dr. Zelken beforehand.

Many patients return to desk work within about two weeks. Full exercise usually resumes around four to six weeks, once Dr. Zelken clears you.

If your breasts have good volume but sit low, a lift is ideal. If you also want more fullness, a lift with an implant may suit you better.

Look for extensive experience in breast reduction, lift, and reconstruction — and an obsession with symmetry. Small asymmetries are easy to create and hard to correct.
